Hawken farm- Friday

Our goal for friday was to finish all of the chicken coup we could. In the morning, we went out the garden to make a master plan for what we still needed to finish. We had to figure out a way make raised nesting beds inside the chicken coup. So we used 2 by 4 wood pieces vertically and then screwed in horizontal 2 by 4 wood pieces and then covered it with 16 inch by 72 inch plywood sheet to make the floor of the nesting bed. This took quite a bit of the morning to finish. After we finished the floor for the nesting beds, we had to make dividers using plywood to make 5 nesting beds for the chickens to lay there eggs. This chicken coup can easily hold around 25 chickens. After lunch, we put in the nesting box dividers. We then went into the wood shop and cut two doors in the back wall so that the care taker would be able to access the nesting boxes and gather the chicken eggs. We put the hinges on the bottom of the doors and put latches on the top of the doors so that when you unlatch the door, it will just hang down and you can the shut it so that no predators get in. In the afternoon, we screwed the front and back walls on to the chicken coup.
We still have to stain the remaining exterior of the chicken coup as well. We also have to put a few rods running parallel to the floor so that chickens have a place to perch. We still have to put in a few small windows and cut some air holes to allow for proper ventilation. We will also finish the roof next week, we still have to install the rafters and install the corrugated metal roofing.
